Nitrogen

Poetry and Comment.

How astonishing that language can almost mean, and how frightening that it does not quite.

-Jack Gilbert
The Forgotten Dialect of the Heart
Let the vow of this day keep itself wildly and wholly
Spoken and silent, surprise you inside your ears

-Jane Hirshfield
A Blessing for Wedding
Everything is brushed away, off the sleeve,
off the overcoat, huge ensembles of assertions...

Poems we Love

Here are a few links to poems we really appreciate. We hope this gives some insight into the kind of work we hope to publish.
At the very least, we hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Submissions

close

Nitrogen accepts submissions of original poetry year round. You may submit up to three poems per period. The current period ends March 1st 2012. Poems will be published online (tastefully---not drowning in ads)on an on-going basis. There may be a print anthology published in the future. There is no restriction on sub-genre or style. Both formal and free verse poems are welcome. For now, we have links to poems we love to give you some idea of the kind of poetry we hope to publish. This section will soon be replaced by work submitted to Nitrogen. We love poems that engage the emotions as well as the intellect. We place an emphasis on poetry that shows strong technical craft. We know we love a poem when we find ourselves reading it out loud without realizing it.

In the future will we ask that poets have commented meaningfully on at least poem published on Nitrogen before submitting, but for now submissions are open to everyone.

You must create a free account in order to register, If you have already registered you can log in at the top of the page. We look forward to reading your work.

Nitrogen is used in the production of explosives, integrated circuits and stainless steel. It is a propellant for draught wine and a key ingredient in fertilizer and cyanide. Liquid nitrogen can freeze malignant tissue. Nitrous oxide makes you laugh.

Language is also is a powerful resource that can be shaped into something astonishing in skilled hands. Nitrogen seeks well-crafted poems that make art from raw experience and emotion. We want you to send us your poetry, we want you to read what we publish and we want to get poet and reader talking through our blog. Poets published in Nitrogen will be invited to submit a short essay on their poem which we will post to a blog where readers can share their reactions, praise and even criticism. Nitrogen will not only be a place to read poetry, but also a place to learn the craft by interacting with the poets.
